IDENTIFYING YOUR SKIN TYPE

It is essential to know your skin type if you want healthy and flawless skin. Knowing your skin type allows you to know how to care for your skin, select the right products and customize a skin care routine that will work best for you. The main skin types to consider include: dry, oily, normal, sensitive and combination. There is a very simple method to determine the type of skin you have, it consists of 4 steps:

STEP 1- Remove any makeup on your face with a makeup remover. Wet your skin with warm water and gently cleanse your skin with a mild face cleansing soap, thoroughly rinse your skin with cool or warm water then pat your face dry with a clean towel (avoid over washing as this can cause your skin to dry out, cause irritation or even increase the oil production rate).

STEP 2- Do not apply any product on your skin and wait for one hour, also avoid touching your skin within this hour.

STEP 3- After waiting for one hour, dab your T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) with tissue. Look at the tissue to determine if oil rubbed off on it or not.

STEP 4- Look into the mirror to determine your skin type.

RESULTS PER SKIN TYPE:

OILY SKIN- Your face should feel clean and smooth right after washing. After dabbing your T-zone with tissue, if the tissue appears to be oily and your face is shiny all over then you have oily skin. Also take a step back from the mirror, if your pores are visible and large then your skin is oily. People with oily skin are more prone to acne and blackheads than people with other skin types. Oily skin will start to feel greasy again as your day continues.

DRY SKIN- Your skin will feel tight right after washing. You may notice red, flaky patches all over your face. Take a step back from the mirror, if your pores are not at all visible then you have dry skin.

COMBINATION SKIN- This is when your face has a mixture of oily, dry and normal skin. Your T-zone will feel clean right after washing but the rest of your face will feel tight and after dabbing your T-zone, the tissue will appear to be oily. Combination skin occurs when you have more than one pore size on your face resulting in a combination of dry, oily and normal skin.

SENSITIVE SKIN- This is the toughest skin type to deal with. Your face may get red, itchy, flaky, resulting into irritation after using certain facial products. Extra care has to be taken for in order not to have break outs.

NORMAL SKIN- If you have noticed your skin does not fit into any category stated above then you are free of problems, meaning you have normal skin which requires low maintenance. This means your pores will be visible but not large. Your skin looks healthy, has an even colour and is elastic.

Note: There may be other skin issues one faces, such as acne or hyperpigmentation, these are different for skin type and we always recommend a dermatologists opinion if you are experiencing severe challenges.
