The last step in any good skin care routine is moisturizing, it helps to re-hydrate the skin and can leave it feeling softer and smoother. The end goal of hydrating your skin is to retain your skin’s elasticity and reduce the signs of aging for a longer period of time. First, you have to determine your skin type, choose the right product for your skin type and learn how to apply these products properly.

Moisturizers should be applied on damp skin twice a day (daytime and night), as they both serve different purposes. Moisturizing during the day ensures that your skin stays hydrated and protected against the environmental influences it might face throughout the day. It is also important to remember to use a day moisturizer that includes sun protector factor (SPF) to help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays, if your day moisturizer does not include SPF then buy a sunscreen to use before applying your moisturizer on your skin.

Your skin’s hydration level reduces at night, it is in its peak state of repair and rebuilding at night, with the majority of cell turnover and regeneration occurring when you are asleep. For this reason, you should apply products that help with this recovery stage at night. Night creams include essential ingredients, such as retinols and peptides that help soothe and repair the skin while maintaining your skin’s hydration level.

Tips by skin concern;

Dry Skin- Use a moisturizer that is labelled "for dry to very dry skin." If your skin is only a little bit dry, use a product that is labelled "for normal to dry skin. If you want to use a natural ingredient, use an oil based cream such as olive oil or coconut oil. A cream is better for dry skin than a lotion because it contains more oil and is, therefore, better at locking in moisture and helping to hydrate dry skin. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and dimethicone which help keep skin hydrated. Glycerine, propylene glycol, proteins and urea also help attract water to your skin.

Oily skin or Acne Prone Skin- Look for a moisturizer labelled "for oily to normal skin." Use a water based lotion because it does not contain the extra oils found in moisturizing creams. If you are prone to acne you will also want to look for a non-comedogenic facial moisturizer that will not clog your pores.

Sensitive skin- Sensitive skin is usually the hardest skin type to maintain.  Look out for moisturizers that are labelled “for sensitive skin”, you have to check that they are hypoallergenic and fragrance free.
